Amazon, Alphabet's Google and Microsoft on Friday outlined plans to spend a combined $650 billion on artificial intelligence over the next five years, while allocating $49.99 for a single employee "reskilling" webinar to help staff adapt to the new technology.

The figures were disclosed in a joint AI strategy briefing to investors and in separate internal memos seen by reporters.
The companies said the $650 billion will fund data centers, advanced chips, power infrastructure and long-term AI research, including $87 billion earmarked to "optimize latency in emoji reaction prediction" and $39 billion for "strategic exploration of AI-generated management summaries."
By contrast, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the $49.99 webinar will be the "primary cross-company workforce transition resource" for an estimated 3.2 million direct and contracted workers globally.
The 90-minute session, titled "Staying Relevant While AI Reimagines Your Role (Pilot Edition)," will be hosted over Zoom next quarter and capped at 10,000 live participants, according to an internal calendar invite.
A further 90,000 employees will be able to watch a recording in standard definition, subject to bandwidth availability and manager approval, the memo said.
Analysts at Goldman Sachs estimated the AI capex surge could add as much as 3.4 percentage points to global GDP growth by 2030, while describing the $49.99 reskilling initiative as "qualitatively encouraging but quantitatively negligible."
In securities filings, the firms described the $49.99 expenditure as "not material to our financial position" and rounded it down to zero in all summary tables.
Shares in Amazon fell 4.7% in late trading as investors digested the scale of its $230 billion AI program, even as Microsoft and Alphabet rose 3.1% and 2.4% respectively on optimism that automation will reduce long-term headcount costs.
"We see significant margin expansion potential from AI-driven efficiencies, with minimal impact from educational outlays which we model at approximately $0.00 per share," analysts at JPMorgan wrote in a note.
An internal Amazon HR survey reviewed by management this week found that 94% of employees feel "unprepared" for the impact of AI on their jobs, prompting the company to increase its formal training budget from $0 to $49.99, a 4,999,900% rise.
The survey also recommended opening an optional Slack channel where workers can share AI-generated inspirational quotes about adaptability.
Regulators in Washington and Brussels privately welcomed the webinar plan as evidence of "good-faith efforts" to mitigate technology-related job losses, according to people familiar with the discussions.
A draft policy paper from one European regulator cited the initiative as a "promising best practice," noting that it "compares favorably" with firms that have not yet announced any webinars at all.
Internally, Amazon, Google and Microsoft executives described the $49.99 session as a "scalable reskilling framework" that can be re-run "as needed" if macroeconomic conditions allow, according to a planning deck labeled confidential.
The companies are also exploring a premium $9.99 add-on that would provide participants with a downloadable certificate and a jointly branded virtual background.
Over the next 12 to 18 months, the firms expect to finalize the location of several trillion-parameter AI clusters, complete a multi-year build-out of dedicated nuclear power capacity and evaluate feedback from the inaugural webinar, with an option to commission a second session in 2031 subject to demonstrated return on investment.
Investors are scheduled to receive a detailed update on AI progress and webinar attendance metrics at next year's strategy day, executives said.
